Description | Species 8472 makes a surprise appearance in the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone, which the Breen (along with their Alrakis Pact allies) labels an alliance between Cardassia and the foreign power. A string of 8472 appearances culminates in an attack on a Federation system. While the Alrakis Pact condemns the Cardassians for attacking the Federation, Starfleet calls in Memory Theta to confirm or deny the alleged Cardassian link in the sporadic attacks by Species 8472. Can Memory Theta uncover the mystery before war breaks out between the Federation and the Cardassian Union? |

Mission Summary
Through in-depth and occasionally violent investigation, Memory Theta discovered that a remnant of the Cardassian Obsidian Order was attempting to incite war against the new Detapa Council as a play to return to power. Cardassian scientists had experimented with phase-cloak technology but only succeeded in creating quantum singularity breaches into fluidic space. The Obsidian Order obtained the defunct project data and weaponized the device into a death beacon that would open a breach into fluidic space in a desired target area which would then attract a martial response from Species 8472 and their immensely powerful bio-ships.
Memory Theta also determined that due to infighting between various divisions of Starfleet Intelligence, that information was already known among certain echelons of the intelligence community, yet the data was not released. In a stunning turn, SFI's Special Operations squashed the intel in order to send a lone operative into deep cover in order to root out the resurging Obsidian Order from within. While that operation was successful, it came at an extremely high price -- many casualties, a devastated planet, and an even greater war than the Obsidian Order had been inciting.
All roads led to the Cardassian world of Soukara where the Obsidian Order's repurposed Dominion base that had designed the beacon technology became overrun by Species 8472. A catastrophic event led to several million square kilometers of the Soukaran planetary crust being dragged into fluidic space along with the USS Phantom. The field team was able to strike a careful truce between Species 8472, whose representatives named them The Groundskeepers and revealed their entire race is antibodies for a galaxy-sized macro-organism called The Morphon. When it was revealed that fluidic space is the internal biome of a vast cosmic entity, Starfleet Command agreed to place the blame squarely at the feet of the Obsidian Order who had been conveniently eradicated by the Groundskeepers from fluidic space. The Cardassian Union readily accepted this conclusion, and as did the Breen, albeit far more reluctantly, and thus the official story for the Species 8472 incursions omitted any reference to the Morphon.
