Naked Ambition

Posted on Tue Sep 4th, 2018 @ 5:56am by Captain Akiva ben-Avram & Lieutenant Commander Kiril Nevin & Lieutenant Nevada McKay M.D.

581 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: S1E2: Half Past Dead
Location: Observation Deck
Timeline: MD 1

Not for the first time that day, Akiva wondered what he was doing aboard Memory Theta. Bending rules in order to keep state secrets was one thing; blatantly harassing personnel out of frustration was quite another. He was supposed to be in charge; not just as the administrator, but also the JAG representative. There was no excuse for what Mrazak had done, keeping two Starfleet officers confined to a forcefield in various states of undress.

He quietly and internally scolded himself for not denouncing Mrazak more harshly on the spot. Instead, he had run to the nearest replicator for uniforms. His years as an Ops Chief made quick work of the programming menu, but he still had to guess at the proper sizes. Despite his briefest of glances at either lieutenant, he felt he had come close. The longer he took, the angrier they would undoubtedly be.

By the time he reentered the Observation Deck, it was empty save for Nevada and Nevin. What had Ferrofax called it? A 'cone of shame'?

"Ferrofax, deactivate forcefield," Akiva said.

"I want you to oversee the transfer and installation of the red matter device--" Mrazak's recorded voice was shut off in mid-sentence as the force field disappeared with a snap. The holographic clothing disappeared along with it.

Akiva stepped forward with two freshly replicated uniforms folded in hand. "Here," he said gingerly, eyes averted once more.

Nevin pushed Akiva's hand away, not taking the uniform. "I have no need of anything from you," he said, taking a step away from the place he'd been standing for the past hour.

Nevada on the other hand Snapped the Uniforms from his hand, her face Red with rage. "I swear Someone is getting JAGGED for this shit," she snarled as she hastily made herself decent.

"Don't bother telling Commander ben-Avram of your complaints," Nevin said, shooting Akiva a nasty glance. "He either doesn't care or doesn't have the power to fix it."

Akiva's olive cheeks flushed a little at the lieutenant's chastising. "I can't turn back time and get you reassigned to a ship that's tens of thousands of lightyears away. But... I can do something about this." His hands closed into fists. "I will do something about this." Checking his chronometer, he said, "You two are due on the Phantom within the hour. I'll take your sworn statements when you get back, by which time I will have opened an Article 32 investigation on Commander Mrazak."

"Sure," Nevin said as he walked towards the door. "And then that investigation will be buried and I'll still be stuck on this god-forsaken station against my will."

"I'll see you transferred if that's what you want," Akiva said to Nevin's back, "but wouldn't you rather see justice served before you go?"

"Justice against you?" Nevada all but growled as she crossed her arms. "Sounds Fan-fucking-tastic."

Akiva shook his head in bewilderment. "B-wh-what? Me?! It wasn't me!" He held up the uniform that Nevin had declined. "I'm the one trying to fix it!"

"After ordering those fucking holographic uniforms!" Nevada Shouted.

"Would you rather have stayed naked?!" Akiva flinched, realizing he had just shouted back at the junior officer. "Everybody else just stood there and watched." Though his volume had dropped, his tone remained angry. The fact that she had been nude in the first place made Akiva blush slightly once again, much to his chagrin. "Get to your post. We'll revisit this when you return."
