Mission 0: Everybody Has A Story
Timeline: Present
The cool sleek hull of a ship slipped through empty space with ease. The citrine glow along the hull casting shadows along the surface. The small vessel came to a halt, it's stabilizers firing on and off, keeping the ship steady and stable.
"Gul Kretok," came the voice of the man standing at the side helm console, his leathery fingers resting near the emergency controls which he hoped he wouldn't need to use. "We've arrived at the desired coordinates."
The large Cardassian man stood from his chair, walking forward towards the viewscreen. "And how long does this version take to charge?" he asked, looking in the opposite direction.
The woman standing at the science station was petite, her skin ebony and smooth. She looked Human, except for her pitch-black eyes, which were a dead giveaway as to her true species. "It shouldn't take but a few minutes," she said. She looked down at the screen as locks of her raven hair fell down around her face. "I've begun the charging sequence."
At the front of the vessel, the green crystalline emblem began to glow as streaks of gold pulsed within its deep recesses. The delicate silver metal lattice that held the device in place began to strain under the pressure but gave no sign of giving.
The moments passed in silence as everyone on the Bridge sat in suspended terror. There were no guarantees of success and the last three attempts ended with more death than anyone had anticipated, or signed up for. But duty called and left little room for self-preservation. They would sit here and wait and pray to whatever deity held their soul for a successful run.
"It is ready," the woman said, finally looking up to the Cardassian man that stood in the middle of the room. "On your orders, Gul."
The man turned to the viewscreen, then back to the Betazoid woman. He gave her a stiff nod before turning, once again, to the front.
With a pulse, the device gathered its energy and shot it forward. The verdant beam twisted as the gold thread arced around it. And where the energy met space, a flash appeared and a crack in the universe began to form. As the crevice widened, deepened, it's maw filled with the swirling emerald region beyond.
"It's working," the Gul Kretok said, his face twisting into a devilish smile. This was the farthest they had gotten.
The woman stood there, her eyes closed as she took deep breaths. "I can feel it. I can feel them." She opened her eyes and looked straight at the man. "They're ready for us."
