Mission:
Season 1 Interlude I (E2.5)
Location: Administrator's Office | Deck 4 - Overwatch Station
Timeline: Immediately after "All Good Things"
Kiril Nevin stood in front of the door that lead into Commander Akiva ben-Avram's office, his hands clasped behind his back, waiting to be allowed in. It was only a few minutes since the promotion meeting, a meeting where the station's CO asked to see him. While that wasn't necessarily a bad sign, it certainly wasn't the best of news. But he took a breath, keeping his nerves low.
"Enter," he heard.
The doors opened and Nevin stepped forward into the room. "Good morning, Commander. You asked to see me?" he asked, standing in front of the man's desk, ignoring the Intel officer who stood off in the corner.
"I did." Akiva looked up from his desk long enough to nod toward the chair in front of it. "Please take a seat. We have more business to discuss."
"With all due respect, Commander, I'd like to stand," Nevin said, raising his chin just slightly.
Kaz shifted in the background and chuckled.
"Fair enough." Akiva paused before adding, "Lieutenant Commander." He ran his finger along the PADD on his desk until he retrieved the desired field. "I have news for you which I wanted to deliver in private. Once you take a look, I think you will appreciate the reason why." He turned the PADD around and slid it to the edge of the desk.
With a bit of hesitation, Nevin reached out and picked up the PADD. His eyes passed left to right as he read the contents, his eyebrows scrunching as he continued to read.
"I don't understand," he said, finally, looking up at Akiva, then to Kaz, and back to Akiva. "I'm...being reassigned back to the Gallagher?"
"It's what you wanted, is it not?" Akiva folded his hands into a steeple. "After our previous conversation, I checked with admiralty to see what strings I could pull. Lots of conscription authority, but very little with reassignment. As circumstance would have it, though, it turns out that the Gallagher suddenly has a classified object that it is tasked with ferrying to this side of the Epatha Gateway." He threw a shrewd glance at Kazyah in the corner. "And, as a Lieutenant Commander, you would be qualified to replace its former CMO. Congratulations... Nevin."
"It...it is," the man said, still clearly in shock. Slowly his mouth formed into a smile. "This isn't a joke? Some sick trick?"
"What would be the point of that?" Akiva asked with a scowl. "The Phantom will rendezvous with the Gallagher at the mouth of the Epatha Gateway within the next 90 days, by which time you will have packed your bags and gotten the b'azazel out of here. Time waits for no man." The makings of a sly smirk split his taciturn expression.
"Thank you, Commander," Nevin said, reaching his hand out towards Akiva. "This means a lot to me in ways you might not understand. And it's been an incredible honor to work with your team. I wish you all the best."
Akiva stood to his feet and grasped the Bajoran's hand. "The honor was mine. Thank you for providing a much-needed conscience to the field team. B'hats lekha to you, and to us who are poorer for your absence."
With a nod of his head, Nevin turned and left the room.
Once they were alone, Kaz took a step forward from the corner of the room he was hiding in, towards the desk. "I take it the arrest went as expected?" he asked, standing with his arms clasped behind his back.
"Not arrest," Akiva chided playfully. "Detention. Placing him under arrest would give him certain rights that he doesn't deserve. He will be lawfully detained until the charges are brought to a hearing."
"Lawfully detained without charges?" Kaz smirked, "Doesn't sound very lawful to me. If it was, he'd have been booked into the Brig."
"Charges were filed," Akiva said. "He's confined to his new quarters and workstation pending a disciplinary review. Nothing illegal about it."
Kaz nodded. "An interesting turn of events," he said. "Events I wasn't expecting, and yet are exactly what you would do. Glad to see you haven't lost who you are."
"We're doing it, Kaz." Akiva smiled at his old frenemy. "We're making a difference, one step at a time."
