Personal History The galactic terrorist known as Saalkan was born Za'ul Kanaam Kaiyen in the year 2269. He was the liaison between the V'Shar (Vulcan Security) and the Vulcan Science Institute. At the onset of the Federation-Cardassian War in 2347, Za'ul was killed in action. But rather than inter her husband to the grave, Thesan of the Vulcan Science Institute performed the forbidden Occult ritual of Fal-tor-pan which placed the katra of Za'ul into a cloned new body. Thesan kept her transgression secret and was forced to pretend that the clone was her son rather than her husband's clone indwelt by his katra.

Za'ul reborn as Saalkan spent his days in the inner rooms of the Vulcan Science Institute. At first he was grateful to have cheated death, but the existential angst of death and rebirth embedded a seed within him that soon blossomed into an obsession for immortality. Fate didn't make mistakes, so if he was fated to have cheated death once, then what sense did it make for him to succumb to it the end? Saalkan made use of the V'Shar protocols he knew from his former life, as well as the secret knowledge kept in the hidden vaults of the Institute, and in time turned his obsession into a quest. He formed illicit contacts from the V'tosh Ka'tur brotherhood to the nefarious Black Nagus to the Dosi Consortium that dominated the Gamma Quadrant underworld all in search of scattered Vulcan artifacts and assorted technology from other civilizations which complemented them with compatible concepts.

In order to facilitate his ventures, Saalkan first employed himself as a surveyor for the Institute, but in time he required clearance and access such as only Starfleet could provide. The day he entered Starfleet, he was able to bypass the Academy in lieu of his alleged experience with the Vulcan Science Academy which allowed him the veneer of bypassing Starfleet protocol when needed without having the book thrown at him. As a result, he bounced between Ensign and Lieutenant Junior Grade a number of times through a few years of service.

In 2387, Lieutenant JG Saalkan was transferred to the USS Vindex where he served as a run-of-the-mill Science officer who quickly distinguished himself as a brilliant researcher. While socially aloof, he proved his worth several times, not least of all as a member of Akiva ben-Avram's secret research team which created a synthetic lifeform in contravention of interstellar law. When his network of graverobbers, mercenaries, smugglers, and cutthroats finally assembled the pieces to the Vorl-tak device, an ancient Vulcan weapon of mass destruction, Saalkan abandoned his Starfleet commission in a mutiny that sought to utilize the Starfleet vessel as a component in his master plan. The mutiny was defeated and he was forced to abandon ship with his motley crew of hired mercenaries and brainwashed officers as well as a number of hostages.

The surviving crew of the Vindex rallied under the command of acting captain Commander Akiva ben-Avram, taking pursuit of Saalkan's vessel through the triple-agent Kazyah Linn. Through a daring multi-stage rescue operation, Major Storr Garlake led a team into the heart of Saalkan's foritifed laboratory on Veloz Prime and rescued the hostages before Commander ben-Avram rained quantum fire down on the facility. Starfleet recovery teams remanded the wreckage of Saalkan's redesign of the Vorl-tak to Memory Theta under the designation MT-9939, AKA The God Machine. Unbeknownst to most of the Starfleet community, Starfleet Intelligence has kept its dossier on Saalkan open due to communication recovered subsequent to the events of the Vindex on Veloz Prime pointing to his status as remaining at large.
